The Root of it All

Hello Everyone! It's Amelia Reporting from Yesteryear Acres!

Today my Dad and I spent a majority of our day in the garden. It was time to pick ALL of our root vegetables. We had two kinds of onions, beets, and potatoes to pick. Fortunately we got quite a haul!!! This evening we are boiling and packing all the beets that way we can enjoy a taste of summer any time we want for the rest of the year. I know, right now you are wondering what it is like to dig up root veggies in 90 degree weather and process them for the year?! Luckily I took many pictures so that friends and family not currently dyed pink from beets would not feel left out :)

Step 1 - Pick the Veggies

Look at our awesome Haul!!!

Time to go Process the Roots

Look at our BEET-UTIFUL bed of veggies

Step 2- Get the beets clean. Luckily my Dad and I had lots of help!

Even Dottie was ready to prepare the beets

Step 3- Boiling the Beets

Ready to be peeled!

We have 3 more big pots to go

Step 4- Cooling the beets... AKA Try not to burn your hands while peeling
Step 5- Peeling

My Dad is an Expert Peeler

Ta-Da!!!
Peeled and ready to be bagged!
Our only golden beet to make it!

Step 6- Vacuum Packing the Beets-- Ready for the Freezer!

Now it is time to repeat steps 2 through 6!

Let's hear it for the roots!!

Packed and Out the Door

I got a call from the Marine Corps that my older daughter is not well.  She was hospitalized and they suggested that I get down to the Marine Corps base.  Thankfully with the help and support of my family, I was packed and out the door and on a flight to North Carolina in record time.  I am so grateful that my younger daughter Amelia rushed home to Yesteryear Acres and is now helping Mr. Yesteryear Acres with everything.  She is doing the garden work and doodle doggie work and doodle puppy work right alongside Mr. Yesteryear Acres so I can concentrate on how to get my older daughter well again. I booked a one-way ticket so I don't know when I will be back at Yesteryear Acres again, but hopefully it won't be too long.  The only thing that matters is getting my daughter well and back on her feet as quickly as possible.  Thank you to my family for all the help!
Thank you Mr. Yesteryear Acres for taking care of everything at home. Thank you Amelia for leaving your job and becoming a much needed and vital part of Yesteryear Acres. Thank you mom for the grocery delivery - I now will not starve. And most of all -
Thank you everyone for the concerns, prayers and well-wishes.  We appreciate it so very much.

Hay Noooooooo

Yesterday we began the process of getting our 2nd cutting of hay in.  The hay field was cut, the hay slowly warmed and dried by the sun's rays and today the raking began.
It wasn't long before Mr. Yesteryear Acres got the hay in nice neat rows.
Everything was moving quickly.
We would have the hay baled in record time.

Time to get out the hay baler.
We are in the home stretch now!

Ummmmmm What ARE those clouds?!
The forecast clearly said NO rain until tomorrow!

We haven't started baling yet.  The hay is all dry and ready.

Dear Mother Nature,
This is not the proper sequence for baling hay.
Now we have rows of perfectly raked WET hay.
Hay Nooooooooooo!
